Fantasy Golf League is Go!

The work is never finished so why hold back any longer. The ability to submit your player selections for the Frys.com tournament to the fantasy golf league is live.

Play is free so join in. There are no fees assessed for this tournament however you are required to create an account. If I don't force registration it opens the door for spam. I'm not ready to deal with spam so this step will prevent it.

There will be some problems going forward and one staring me in the face is email configuration. I kept stalling on this issue because I know how to fix it, a good reason to put it on the back burner while more pressing problems were addressed. Now that action of back burner thinking is coming back to burn me. All but a few tweaks remain and I don't have the mail server configured. I'll get it done as it's now hit my list of the next three items to do.

Until then you will see an email error after the form is submitted. But don't worry about it. The information is stored and email notice is a formality. If you get hung up about privacy policies, terms of service, and those pesky rules, don't enter. It's that simple.

Leaglese is coming and will be in place before I ask for entry fees. Consequently there is no prize fund but if enough folks enter I'll mail a sleeve of balls to the winner. I play Titleist and assume everyone does so that's what you will get.

The basic concept is picking five PGA Professionals from the list of tournament players and your best guess at a tournament winner for the tie breaker. You are allowed one entry submission but can edit your selections until the form closes at 9:00 PM PST Wednesday before the tournament. Simple enough, right?

Full instructions will be made available when the rules page is finished but really that's it. A YouTube Video is planned that will walk through the entire process but it is not on the list of three yet so don't hold your breath.

Leave comments, good and bad, and I'll follow up. If email worked I would have a contact form to email me but let's not go there for now.

Good Luck, 'You da Man'

Headed to the 19th hole,

Fantasy Golf Moving Forward

I knew the technical issues associated with setting up a Fantasy Golf League would have its challenges but they are being overcome and everything is progressing nicely.

In fact there is a chance it will go online before this years PGA fall season is over. Only time will tell. Getting everything done before 2010's season is not going to be a problem at all.

At this point I am not real keen about revealing many details but I can tell you I am making this drop dead easy to participate in a weekly event. The one issue concerning me is the amount of time it takes too process entry fee before the event. I ran a trial starting from scratch as a new user and it took almost ten minutes to process payment and submit picks for a weekly event. While ten minutes is not a real long time I know there will be folks arriving at the last minute and rushing to get a submission completed before time expires.

Existing members will have the advantage of skipping registration but are still required to submit contest fees each week. One way to avoid this step is through paypals subscription feature. For those unfamiliar with this feature you sign into paypal and agree to payment then the entry fee is automatically deducted each week. The upside is you are not required to go through the hassle of processing weekly payments. The downside is  fees are automatically being deducted each week from your account; which is fine if you participate each and every week but can really upset you if after five weeks of not participating you realize fifty bucks was deducted from your account, Ouch.

I have not explored if a user can be presented an option of one time payment or subscription but that would solve the problem. I'll report my findings on the blog.

I will do my part advertising the new fantasy golf league but reality is I can only be so effective. The real power of advertising lies in the control of existing players spreading the word. My goal is weekly prizes of $1000. That would be really exciting. The only way to achieve such a lofty goal is by having enough entrants week to week. I know this is possible, but only when word of mouth spreads news. So help me help the prize fund by letting your buddies know what we are doing here.

Thanks,
